Unfortunately, things like this happen in Rio, but when it happens to a person of the middle or upper class the media has a heyday, so there are more details involved. So here it goes.
Lapa is one of the most popular nightlife neighborhoods in Rio, where people of all different social classes mix together on the street, drinking, listening to live music, and eating street food. There are also tons of bars, clubs, and music venues, though some charge strategically scaled covers to keep people out and let only certain people in. In any event, Cariocas of all ages flock to Lapa for a good time, even though it's still a fairly poor and very gritty place, despite recent development.
So last Thursday night, two friends, Victor and Tiago, went out in Lapa to a bar playing live samba, to celebrate Victor's great grade he got for the past semester in one of the hardest programs in the country. Victor, a typical Carioca, was 23 and was studying naval engineering at UFRJ, one of the city's best universities. He was due to graduate in June, since he'd taken a semester off to study abroad in the United States. He lived with his dad and brother, since his mom died of cancer when he was 18.
Victor and Tiago were drinking and talking at the bar when all of the sudden, Victor's head snapped forward, and he collapsed onto the ground, blood pooling from his neck. He was rushed to the hospital where he was put into an induced coma. Police suspect a disgruntled local resident fed up with the nightlife noise in the neighborhood, but they later arrested a suspect who is basically a common criminal. In the meantime, Victor was transferred to a private hospital, still in a coma. But on the fourth day after the incident, he went into cardiac arrest and died.
All it took was a single bullet.
