If there was a pageant for economic growth this year, Brazil would be the girl with the runny mascara and poofy gown, cradling her enormous bouquet.
Mr. New Neighborhood has written a glowing front page story about Brazil's growth in the New York Times, which is just the cherry on top of Brazil's success this year (you can bet a mention of the NYT article will be on the front page of every major Brazilian newspaper).
As much as I am thrilled for Brazil and for Lula, I have to say, I am ever the skeptic. Despite the supposed millions of people lifted out of poverty, the numbers of people still struggling to get by are completely overwhelming. It will take more than growth and Bolsa Familia to even out the income disparities in Brazil.
Hi Rachel,
Interesting article. Just wondering, do you think this economic boom will help with immigration relations in the US and Europe? Seems to me like it might relax some restrictions found when applying for visas if more Brazilians have a solid financial foundation at home to rely on.

I'm glad Lula is at least trying to make real change, even though I don't always agree with his methods. The poverty gap in Brazil is so big that it is going to take at least 3 generations to solve, even if people are truly dedicated to solving it.
